What counts as a dental emergency

If you’re experiencing any of these, call us right away. When in doubt, call — we’ll help you decide what to do next.

Severe toothache

Persistent or throbbing pain that won’t ease — often a sign of infection or a cracked tooth.

Knocked-out tooth

Time is critical — a tooth can often be saved if you act within the hour. Call immediately.

Broken or chipped tooth

A cracked, broken, or chipped tooth — especially with pain or a sharp edge.

Swelling or abscess

Facial swelling, a gum bump, or fever can signal infection that needs prompt care.

Lost crown or filling

A lost or loose crown, filling, or bridge leaves the tooth vulnerable — let’s protect it.

Bleeding or soft-tissue injury

A cut lip, tongue, or gum that won’t stop bleeding after gentle pressure.

Life-threatening symptoms? If you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, or trauma to the head, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room first.

What to do right now

Quick steps to ease pain and protect your tooth on the way to our office.

1Knocked-out tooth

Pick it up by the crown (not the root), rinse gently, and try to place it back in the socket. If you can’t, keep it in a cup of milk and call us immediately — time matters.

2Severe toothache

Rinse with warm salt water and gently floss to remove any trapped food. Take over-the-counter pain relief as directed. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum.

3Broken tooth

Save any pieces, rinse your mouth with warm water, and apply a cold compress to the cheek to reduce swelling. Cover a sharp edge with dental wax if you have it.

4Swelling

Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek and keep your head elevated. Don’t apply heat. Call us right away — swelling can indicate infection.
